TN: Twisted Nematic This is the basic fluid technology, it is the least expensive and has the least features as well. But despite its limitations, this technology does have its applications. The most common application of this fluid type is the good old digital calculator, digital wrist watch, digital clock, and some Caller ID boxes. This fluid technology is ideal for segmented displays where it will provide the highest contrast ratio. The segments will be pure black and clearly visible at any angle. A good example of this fluid being used is in gas pumps (the Meter that displays your cost and gallons pumped), the screen has big characters, which help, but the characters are clear and legible from almost any position. However, this fluid technology has also been used on some dot matrix character models. Usually you will find this fluid in some character based displays that have a duty cycle of 1/8, because if the duty cycle is 1/16 or 1/32, or greater, the contrast begins to degrade very rapidly. To a point where the characters on the display become very blurred. When this fluid is used in the dot-matrix character types, there is a viewing angle limitation associated with it. This fluid will offer the best contrast in either of the two positions. Top viewing or bottom viewing (as shown in the diagram below Diag. 1.0)
The viewing cone is approximately 35 ~ 45 degrees and cannot be increased, but can move anywhere within the "Adjustable Range." If you tried to adjust the viewing cone out of the adjustable range, the characters would be come very faint or, depending on where you are looking from, too dark. In addition, the background color for this type of display is normally grey/silver. No other color is available, unless you pay for a custom silk screened background color for the display. |
