A transmissive display requires the use of its backlight for illumination. Without the backlight, the display may not be clearly visible in most lighting conditions, and in lighted environments, the display can appear washed out.

The photo above shows the display in an dark environment and the LED backlight is providing 100% of the light. Thus as the light is transmitted through the LCD panel, the Active pixels are preventing the light to pass through in those areas, thus you see text.

This photo shows the LCD in a typical room environment, although you can see the text, this due to the LED backlight output brightness is significant enough to over come the brightness of the room. If however, if the backlight was turned OFF, then the characters will be harder to see.
